Just Strip-Teasing

I looked into the mirror when I got home from the Striptease workshop we hosted on Saturday, and I looked different.  My lips were puffy, my hair had tons of volume from all of the hair flipping.  I felt feminine, empowered, and sexified!

When I was younger, I could have been called a tomboy…I remember sitting on Santa’s lap one year, and there was a news crew there to do a story about Christmas in the mall.  Very excited to be on TV, we watched as they described the scene “here are two little boys (me and my brother) sitting on Santa’s knee”, so ya, you can say that I got in touch with my masculine side at a young age.

Other than a high school fashion show opening number, my dance experience has been limited (do my 20’s + vodka count?)…  But here I am, head of a fitness/yoga facility that has HUGE potential to be a fitness/yoga/dance facility, and I thought it was about time to pull up my dancer pants and jump into our first workshop!

I’m happy to share that burlesque performer and dancer Genevieve Dupont was a dream.  She opened up with ‘if you have dance experience and you’re used to counting time, you’re going to hate me’.  As a martial artist, I’m used to breaking down techniques, so this idea freaked me out a little. Yes it gave me anxiety, but more importantly it gave me the opportunity to challenge myself mentally and physically. My mantra these days – one step at a time.

Gen presented these seductive combos, taking us through step-by-step until we had an entire dance to “River” by Bishops Briggs.  We marketed the workshop as a Valentine’s Day gift to your partner. I realized when I was promoting and participating in the workshop that the session  was so much more.  It wasn’t about my partner.  It was about me.  I wanted to connect with myself.  Seduce myself. After all, we are and should be our own biggest fans!

At the beginning of the workshop I wasn’t even sure I would be able to perform the dance for my partner, and by the end I was recording myself and posting it on Zen Fitness’ Instagram and Facebook accounts.  Let’s just say, I nailed it!  (Genevieve said so too lol)

Next stop, pole dancing – watch out Seija!

** this dance session had such an impact, we will be adding a weekly class to the schedule.  Stay tuned.
